For reasons I’ve never quite understood Lakeland is always busier in the months it looks least beautiful. Sure, the fells hold charms in summer; the days are longer and the lakes warm enough for a swim. But I’d swap all of that for Alpine conditions on the crags, frosty mornings, crystal clear air and a beer or two in front of a log fire any day. And this year’s been as good as any I remember, with snowfall coming – sometimes down to valley level – at almost weekly intervals. White tops have become a near-permanent fixture, and we’ve had more than a few perfect winter days’ walking.

It’s all made for some fantastic photographic conditions.
