It was one of those perfect Autumn evenings… air and visibility utterly clear, and the fells all but deserted. After a long drive from down South, I parked in Glenridding and made the hour-long ascent of Sheffield Pike – and what a view, the Far Eastern fells stretching across the horizon in the fading light.

Dusk from Sheffield Pike, looking over the Far Eastern fells. Ullswater is less than half-an-hour's drive from the cottage.
